Lean Farming has developed a 5-point program for staff leadership in agriculture companies. I call the program “A net of structure”.
There is a jungle of good advice and solutions, so it helps a lot to put it into some boxes. The five boxes in “A network of structure” covers the subject using checklists, forms and methods.
1. Correct recruitment
You must be able to attract the type of employee you want. If you want ambitious and talented people, then you must signal that you have something to offer the group. You must first hire the right attitude at the personal level, the professional can teach people. Make a strategy and a plan in the short and long term.
2. Clear roles and responsibilities
The organization chart must be clear and understand by all. Responsibilities and work plan must be firm and not changed according to whom you employ. If you hired someone who cannot manage all the responsibility, then you should instead train and support, until the level is in place.
3. Clear expectations for performance and results
You have to make written standard operating procedures for all tasks, so that everybody knows how to accomplish the job. Arrange training in the standards, so the employee can fulfill the job properly. It must also be perfectly clear to the employee, what results you expect. It gives the employee security and job satisfaction.
4. Constructive evaluation and follow-up
Make a plan how to instruct and train new employees. You must have an on-boarding program and an instruction plan. You must do very close follow-up in the beginning. Evaluate all employees at all levels after a performance appraisal form. Hand over a certificate when they manage to work independently on each task or machines.
5. Continuous feedback and coaching
Leadership is to provide feedback all the time. When you put something in motion, it is your job to follow it through to the end. Your employees need coaching so they can develop in the job. They are both proud and committed when they feel that you are interested in seeing them grow in the position.
