What would you like to achieve with Lean?
Start by writing down what you would like to achieve with Lean. What is your vision? The vision need not be measurable. You can think of it as a direction. It just doesn’t have to be empty words or smart phrases. You and your people must believe it.
Examples of a Lean Vision
- We want to eliminate waste in production and involve the employees – and it must be fun while we do it.
- We will reduce labor costs, improve our communications and gain control over our maintenance costs.
- We want to be more productive and improve working relationships between field staff and barn staff.
- We want the farm to be clean and tidy, and then we want to be more efficient.
Example where they made a vision about order and tidyness
With the Lean 5S you can get the farm, tools and work areas organized. But what is order? It can be different from person to person – and that gives a lot of conflicts.
This farm held a meeting with all employees, where they agreed on the vision. Thus, you gained co-ownership of the process and it is quite important when everyone is involved.
The Lean tool 5S is just great because it does not make the clean-up personal, but you organize the workplace so that everyone can work most efficiently.
Once they had adopted the vision, the process was planned so that everyone was involved and time was set aside for it. A plan was made for the following areas:
- Exterior areas and buildings exterior
- Buildings inside
- Tools, castration boxes, etc.
- Office and common room
- Machine shop and workshop
